Do you know what your core values are?
Clarity on your core values has a positive impact on your intentionality, purpose and sense of fulfillment. Identifying core values or gaining more clarity on them sounds like a simple idea, but is really difficult to apply.
Not sure what your core values are? Let me share one way to dig deeper –
The “Why” method - is normally used for root cause analysis but can also serve you to find the core value behind a certain action or situation you found yourself in. Using the method, you question every statement with “Why?”, up five to seven times, five to seven layers down. Naturally, your answers will go from something situational or action-oriented to a value word. Let me show how this works:
“In this meeting I got really angry when my colleague said my results were not great.”
“Why?”
“Because he made me look bad in front of everyone.”
“Why?”
“My reputation is at stake, and he could have shared this with me privately”
“Why?”
“Because I thought we had a kind of relationship where we don’t throw each other under the bus in front of everyone. And it bothers me that he didn’t honor it.”
“Why?”
“I trusted him, and he broke that trust.”
